4/6/19 DeMatha Scrimmage - Boys Race Report, Photos & Video

Race report from Coach Haley:

The St. Albans boys dipped their blades into uncharted waters this past weekend on the upper Anacostia River. Our first ever dual meet against DeMatha Catholic High School came on one of the most beautiful days of the year. The temperatures were moderate, the skies blue and the waters calm. It was an ideal setting for a race. DeMatha rows at Bladensburg Waterfront Park in Maryland. The race course reminded me of a rustic Henley course. There is not much space for more than two eights. Coach Andrew Bright and I decided to race a 1500 meter piece and a 1000 meter piece for each crew. The racing for our boys went very well. Each crew won both races. The varsity race was an excellent contest with our boys winning in a time of 4:38.32 to Dematha’s 4:41.47. Our 2v, 3v and frosh 8’s all won by larger margins. The 1000 meter races followed the same basic margins for each team.

I was most pleased to watch the teams handle the racing in a methodic and aggressive way. Our hard work over winter training and during the spring break Tampa trip really seemed to pay off. Each crew seems poised to continue making progress as we get into the meat of the schedule. Freshman coach Tom Cosgrove has his boys rowing very well and have the joyous spirit of a novice crew. David Mottola has also pulled together the 3v into a solid unit. The 1v and 2v are both moving fast and challenging each other in daily practice. The healthy competitive spirit is making everyone faster. The senior class is providing excellent leadership.

I would like to thank the parents who brought the tent and food to Bladensburg. I would also like to thank the DeMatha coaches, oarsmen and parents who were gracious hosts. Even though this was a first I would like to see this regatta continue into the future. Hopefully we can make this happen.
